Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno has agreed on a move to Spanish side Villarreal according to reports in Spain.
News outlet Inside Futbol revealed that 26-year old defender is set to join the Yellow Submarines as soon as his contract expires officially on July 1st.
Moreno has been the subject of ridicule in the past few seasons as the player’s stock reached an all-time low at the Premier League club.
Signed as a young star from Sevilla in a £12million move in 2014, Moreno has endured criticism over his defending during his time at the club. It came as little surprise that Liverpool declined to offer the defender a new contract last season.
It is understood that the player told his representatives of his desire to move back to Spain as he seeks to rebuild his career. At the age of 26, there is time on his side and Villarreal is the perfect club for him.
The renaissance of former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla at the club is a prime example. The Spanish midfielder was ready to quit football last year but has found a new lease of life at Villarreal.
Moreno was known as a cheerful personality in the dressing room during his time in Anfield and would have little problems in adjusting to his new club.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are said to be looking for a replacement for the Spaniard and have Real Betis left-back Junior Firpo as a potential target for the role.
Firpo is valued at €55 million by Real Betis and it remains to be seen if the club would be willing to sanction a huge move for a player that would be a backup option to Andy Robertson.
