Arsenal have reportedly launched a formal bid to sign PSG fullback Thomas Meunier according to news outlets in Europe.
TUTTOmercatoWEB claims that the Gunners have offered a transfer bid of £22 million for the defender as they look to strengthen the backline this summer. Meunier is considered to be an excellent defender and is well known to Arsenal boss Unai Emery,
Emery was the manager that brought him to PSG, when he was in charge of the French side, and is keen to bring the 27-year-old to the Emirates.
Meunier’s future is uncertain, as the Belgian wants out of the club he made just 19 starts for the French Champions this campaign.
Injuries and loss of form contributed heavily to this and it is understood that PSG are willing to let him leave this summer.
The departure of Stephan Lichtsteiner means that Arsenal needs a new right-back ahead of the new season. Hector Bellerin is currently recuperating from a serious long-term injury and may not be fully fit by the start of the season.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles has filled the gap in the past few months but he is not a specialist defender and gets caught out by opposing attacks as seen in the Europa League final.
Meunier is an excellent replacement as he brings experience, defensive solidity and marauding runs to the fullback position.
