Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Lille midfield ace Thiago Mendes according to reports from England. Mendes had been the subject of transfer rumours in recent weeks and it is believed that the Blues have joined the race for his signature.
Reputable journalist Duncan Castles claims that the battle for his signature is between Chelsea and Everton. According to him the Toffees had planned to sign Mendes as a replacement for midfielder Idrissa Gueye should he make a move to PSG in the summer.
It is understood that Chelsea were initially not in the running for the player, but the club has been impressed with his recent performances. Mendes has been impressive this season for Lille with his hardworking attributes in the midfield key to the club’s success so far.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has never hidden his desire for a new midfielder since the departure of Cesc Fabregas to Monaco in January and Mendes fits the bill.
At age 27 the midfielder is entering his peak and has the ability to dovetail perfectly with Jorginho and Kante in the middle of the park. A fee of €26 million has been touted by the media and Chelsea feel that it is a fair price to pay for his services.
However the Stamford Bridge outfit could lose out of his signing if FIFA fails to overturn the current transfer ban placed on the club.
Chelsea were slapped with a ban for two transfer earlier in the year by FIFA. It remains to be seen whether the club would be able to reverse the ban and sign the highly coveted Lille star.
