Chelsea midfielder Mario Pasalic signed a new contract until 2022 and which would increase his time at the club to eight seasons. However, the 24-year-old has returned to Italian side Atalanta on a season-long loan.
Pasalic signed for Chelsea from Croatian side Hajduk Split and was considered one of the top youth prospects at the time. He is yet to break into the Chelsea first team and has experienced loan spells at different clubs in Spain, France, and Russia.
It was last season in Italy with Atalanta that he began to display the sort of form that made him highly sought after in Europe. He made 42 appearances nettings 8 goals as Atalanta became the surprise package of the season.
Pasalic helped Atalanta finish third in the league, which was their highest league position in the club’s history. It is understood that the lure of playing in the Champions League is what made the player eager for another loan move.
Atalanta FC have the option of signing Pasalic on a permanent transfer but they opted for another loan spell.

Chelsea have a policy of signing young players and then sending them on loan to different clubs in a bid to make tidy profit from their sale. However, it had been thought that Pasalic would be among the players given a chance this season under Frank Lampard.
However, it looks like Pasalic is on his way out of the club for another temporary spell.
