Chelsea new manager Frank Lampard has revealed that he would be deploying star player N’Golo Kante into his more natural defensive midfield role.
Former manager Maurizio Sarri caused a major stir last season when he displaced Kante from his role as a defensive midfielder by moving him forward. This was due to the arrival of Italian playmaker Jorginho.
This caused division among fans as many were against this change as it limited Kante’s impact on the field. Opposition teams targeted Jorginho as they tried taking advantage of his inability to defend.
But Lampard in his first interview as Chelsea manager revealed that he would deploy Kante in a more defensive role.
‘I’m not going to sit here and say how were going to look next season because we’re starting pre-season tomorrow and the players are coming back.
‘I think and I’ve said before Kante is one of the greatest midfielders in the world. ‘In the last few years his performances have been outstanding.
‘One of the pleasures of me getting this job is that I’m able to work with players of that quality. ‘My job would be to find the best position to get the best out of him in the team. ‘I’m fortunate to have a player like him, we’ll work, but I know the qualities and attributes he has and will try to get the most out of him.’
If Kante returns to the role in the heart of the midfield it begs the question of what role Jorginho would play in the side. The Italian playmaker is a quality player and was unduly criticized last season. It could be that Lampard uses a double pivot of Kante and Jorginho.
Chelsea are getting ready for pre-season with their summer pretty straight forward. The Blues are currently on a transfer ban and Lampard would have to make do with the current players in the squad.
His first match in charge would reveal the style and tactics that he would be looking to implement next season.
