Arsenal have been given a big boost ahead of the Europa League final as Chelsea midfielder Loftus-Cheek is set to miss out due to injury.
England boss Gareth Southgate confirmed that the 23-year-old had ruptured his Achilles when he announced his UEFA Nations League semi-final squad today. Loftus-Cheek has emerged as a real leader in the Chelsea line-up in the past few weeks with improved performances.
The England international suffered this injury during the post-season friendly against New England Revolution on Wednesday. He is expected to miss several months out of action and faces a battle to be fit for the start of next season.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri would be seething as he has lost an important player before a major final due to a meaningless friendly. Chelsea nevertheless has a large squad with the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley capable of filling into his position.
England would also miss the dynamic midfielder whose movement on/off the ball and goalscoring ability makes him a valuable player for the team.
Chelsea face London rivals Arsenal in the Europa League final in Baku on the 29thof May.
