The current uncertainty over the future of Arsenal captain Laurent Koscienly has brought about the debate of who should take the armband next season. Koscielny reportedly failed to travel with the club for their pre-season tour of America on Thursday.
The 33-year-old is thought to be demanding a summer exit from the club with the likes of Bordeaux, Lyon and Renne’s keen on the defender.
This controversy was further escalated after Arsenal released a statement on Thursday that the club was disappointed in his conduct.
Looking at the current crop of players there have been speculations about which player would wear the captain band next season.
Upon his arrival, Unai Emery appointed five captains, Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka, and Laurent Koscielny. With Cech and Ramsey already out of the club coupled with the uncertainty surrounding Koscienly and Ozil future at the club, Xhaka looks likely to benefit.
However former Arsenal fan favorite Jack Wilshere believes that English defender Rob Holding deserves the role.
Speaking to Football.london, Wilshere said: “Arsenal will have Rob Holding coming back and Hector [Bellerin]. They did their cruciates – and sometimes when you do your cruciate you actually come back stronger – because you have to work on your strength and quads which actually strengthen you more.
“Rob Holding was playing so well before he got injured and will be a great addition to their defence once he’s fit again. I really think he could be a potential Arsenal captain of the future.”
It remains to be seen whether Emery would appoint the defender who impressed last season before suffering an ACL injury.
