Liverpool are one of the club’s that gave been linked with Portugal international Bruno Fernandes.
Several tabloids had reported that the club had made a transfer bid of £40 million that was rejected by Sporting Lisbon.
It is understood that the club are unwilling to pay more than £40 million for the midfielder but could add talented youngster Rafael Camacho to sweeten the deal. Camacho is believed to be a target for the Portuguese side.
It had been reported that Liverpool were in negotiations with Sporting Lisbon over a transfer fee for the 19-year-old. However, the club could include the £9million-rated midfielder as part of the deal for Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes agent is said to have flown into England to discuss bids from several interested clubs with United high up the list.
It is not known whether Liverpool are part of the teams but this transfer looks like it is out of the reach of the Anfield side.
This is a surprise as Liverpool have shown in the past that they are not shy of splashing big fees on quality signings. The Reds midfield remains their weak spot and the arrival of Fernandes would improve that position.
His creativity and goalscoring threat would make the Reds difficult to defend against and the player had spoken in the past about his love for the style of employed by Jurgen Klopp.
It remains to be seen how this transfer would end but United appears his most likely destination.
