Manchester United have completed the signing of Leicester defender Harry Maguire after agreeing terms with the player.
Maguire had been pictured at Carrington training ground yesterday for a medical and the player has penned a six-year contract with the Premier League giants.
The England international is understood to have cost Manchester United £85 million and becomes the most expensive defender in the world, beating the £70 million Liverpool paid for Virgil Van Dirk in 2018.
Speaking to the club’s website, Maguire admitted his delight in making the move to Manchester and thanked former club Leicester City for his time with the club. Maguire insisted that a move to Manchester United was too good to turn down and he shares a similar vision with the club.
“I am delighted to have signed for this great club. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club, and the fans, for their fantastic support over the past two seasons. However, when Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity.”
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Maguire was one of the best defenders in the game and believes his qualities on and off the ball can lead the club to winning major trophies.
“Harry is one of the best centre-backs in the game today and I am delighted we have secured his signature. He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.”
Maguire is considered one of the best defenders in the league but might come under pressure to deliver due to the massive price tag on his head. The 26-year-old could make his debut this weekend at home to Chelsea and United fans will be hoping that he brings quality to their backline.
Maguire made 76 appearances for the Foxes netting six goals in his two seasons with the club.
