Arsenal boss Unai Emery has revealed to the club’s board that Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti is on top of his wish list for the summer transfer window.
The report which is carried by the Daily Star claims that Emery is keen to recruit Umtiti to bolster his current defensive options.
Umtiti has been out of favour at Barcelona in the past few months as manager Ernesto Valverde has preferred Lenglet over him. The World Cup winner’s season has been plagued with injuries and loss of form.
Arsenal would be looking to sign him on a cheap as Barcelona are reported to be looking for funds to finance the transfer of Ajax ace Matthijs de Ligt.
Umtiti is 25 and still has plenty of years in his prime which could mean that Barcelona would expect around £50 million for his services. This figure is around the same amount that Emery has been provided for as a summer budget.
It is difficult to see this transfer happening without sufficient backing from the board. Umtiti’s arrival would certainly improve the team as he boasts of pace and excellent positioning which is vital to thrive in the fast-paced Premier League.
Umtiti signed for Barcelona in 2016 from French side Lyon and has won six titles during his time at the club.
